What does Congenital Calculator do?
Congenital Calculator is a cardiac hemodynamic calculator for use during pediatric cardiac catheterization. It calculates pulmonary and systemic blood flow (Qp, Qs), vascular resistance (PVR, SVR), shunt fractions, and pulmonary hypertension assessment using the Fick principle.
Which VO₂ formula should I use?
The Seckeler 2015 equation is recommended for all ages and is the default. It was specifically validated in patients with congenital heart disease including single ventricle patients. LaFarge & Miettinen is suitable for patients ≥3 years without single ventricle physiology.
How do I generate a PDF report?
Go to the Results tab after entering your data, scroll to the bottom and tap "Generate & Save PDF Report". A formatted report will appear which you can save as PDF using your device's print function.
What is the 8-point saturation step-up warning?
If the difference in oxygen saturation between adjacent cardiac chambers is 8% or less, the app displays an amber warning indicating the step-up may not represent a hemodynamically significant shunt. Clinical correlation is always required.
How are pulmonary hypertension criteria applied?
For two ventricle patients, WHO 2022 criteria are used (mPAP >20 mmHg defines PH). For single ventricle patients, Fontan candidacy thresholds are applied (mTPG >6 mmHg or PVRi >2 WU·m²).
Is this app a substitute for clinical judgment?
No. Congenital Calculator is for clinical decision support only. All results must be verified by a qualified physician. The app does not replace direct measurement of hemodynamic data or clinical judgment.
How do I reset the calculator for a new patient?
Simply refresh the page or close and reopen the app. All fields will reset to their defaults for the next patient.

Congenital Calculator was developed by Subhrajit Lahiri, MD and Omar Abu Anza, MD, pediatric cardiologists with expertise in congenital heart disease and cardiac catheterization.

The app is based on validated hemodynamic calculation methods including the Fick principle, LaFarge & Miettinen VO₂ equations, and the Seckeler 2015 predictive equation (Heart 2015;101:517–524).
